The purpose of this organization is to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and Sisterhood. Alpha Phi Gamma exists to provide service and Asian Awareness to the University and the surrounding communities for the betterment of society. For its members, this organization promotes scholarship and academic excellence, personal development and leadership.
Alpha Phi Gamma is the first Asian American sorority, established on February 1, 1994, at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The Seven Sisters who founded the sorority are Allex Choi, Candy Cunanan, Christine Nguyen, Sandie Rillera, Kolleen Kim, Grace Hsieh and Jennifer Oku. Through their hard work and determination the sorority is now recognized as the first Asian Greek Sorority at Cal Poly Pomona. These Sisters wanted to bring together all women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and Sisterhood. Alpha Phi Gamma was established to promote service and Asian Awareness to the University and to the community. The Sorority’s basis is its pride in being open to new ideas and the understanding of the lifestyle of an Asian American woman.
The unique Sisterhood began at the University of Illinois at Chicago when a group of women individually showed their interest in Alpha Phi Gamma during the Summer of 2011. Seven Ladies wanted to create a bond that they could not find anywhere else in their community. Through unity, Jean Dionicio, Nhi Le, Trish Truong, Chelsea Gabon, Kaitlin Digrispino, Lisa Trinh and Jeanne Khousakoun achieved authentic Sisterhood that could not be imitated. They established this Sisterhood at UIC on February 26th, 2012. The Sorority not only taught them the values of Sisterhood, but also how to grow into independent leaders. Through hardships and struggles, they were able to form a solid foundation on campus. These Sisters wanted to foster the growth of their Sisterhood by giving other individuals the opportunity to gain the same experience that tremendously impacted their lives. They strived to break away from stereotypes by giving back to the community, being involved on campus, and upholding their standards and representation as Classy Ladies of Alpha Phi Gamma. As the Sisterhood continues to grow, the values of Alpha Phi Gamma are exemplified through their dedication. UIC officially earned its recognition as Lambda Chapter on June 27th, 2015. From their desires and accomplishments, they were able to find a home away from home; a second family.
